Water Crisis Through a Gender Lens: Empowering Communities for Environmental Justice

On April 16, 2025, the Faculty of Education in Bilbao hosted an engaging workshop titled "Community Development and Water Crisis: A Social Problem." The event brought together second-year Social Education students and representatives from Arapy Guztiak, a social association dedicated to addressing environmental challenges through community-based approaches.

The workshop offered a comprehensive examination of the water crisis, with particular emphasis on gender perspectives in environmental advocacy. Students explored the complex interplay between climate change and water resource management, analyzing how human activities impact ecosystems on both local and global scales.

Arapy Guztiak showcased various community-driven initiatives designed to mitigate environmental degradation. Throughout the presentation, special attention was given to the often-overlooked role of women in environmental decision-making processes, particularly in regions with lower literacy rates. The workshop highlighted the achievements of female environmental advocates who have made significant contributions despite facing systemic barriers.

The diverse backgrounds of participating students enriched the discussions, bringing multiple perspectives to the conversation. These exchanges enhanced awareness about the interconnected nature of social and environmental challenges, demonstrating how ecological problems invariably produce cascading social consequences. The workshop emphasized community empowerment as a central strategy for addressing these issues, advocating for inclusive approaches that amplify marginalized voices in environmental governance.

Following the theoretical portion, students engaged in a practical exercise, creating informational materials designed to raise public awareness about pressing social and environmental concerns. The discussion broadened to encompass other significant global issues, including the Gaza conflict, prompting thoughtful reflection on human rights and social justice.

The workshop successfully demonstrated how environmental advocacy, community development, and social justice form an integrated framework for addressing today's most urgent challenges, equipping future social educators with valuable perspectives for their professional practice.
