Moving Forward with Eco-Placemaking in Dorog

Building on the momentum of March’s vibrant community action day, Dorog’s eco-placemaking journey pressed on with a second hands-on event at the Schmidt Sándor housing estate on 28 March.

Braving biting winds that felt like winter’s return, the community’s spirit held strong. Familiar faces came back to push the project forward, while new volunteers arrived, infusing the site with fresh enthusiasm.

Building further, together

This second action day centred on bringing the vision of the space to life, adding new layers of creativity plus care.

Participants breathed life into the herb spiral built earlier, nestling carefully chosen plants into its curves. Meanwhile, they finished crafting raised beds and prepared the foundation for a thriving community garden that will flourish for years to come.

The raised beds, crafted from elegantly charred wood and layered with care, blend durability with beauty, becoming both practical and striking features within the garden.

Bringing New Ideas to Community Work

One highlight was seeing a new idea from the Hungarian family business,  Agrologica Kft., which caught everyone's interest.

One raised bed received a wool mulch mat, a natural layer that locks in moisture and slowly nourishes the soil. This practical experiment invites the community to discover the hidden value in materials often overlooked as waste.

Through this down-to-earth demonstration, the project weaves the idea of a circular economy into regular life, making it real and relatable for everyone in the neighbourhood.

A space that arouses curiosity

The site’s transformation is turning heads. Throughout the day, curious neighbours paused to watch the progress and discover what was unfolding in their community.

One elderly resident, passing through the park during her daily walk, shared her enthusiasm and said she is already looking forward to trying the barefoot path once the weather improves, having heard about its health benefits.

A growing sense of ownership

What really shines in Dorog’s eco-placemaking journey proves the deepening sense of community ownership. With returning participants and fresh faces joining in, the movement is not just holding stable but gaining momentum.

Little by little, the site is transforming from a simple green patch into an energetic gathering place, shaped by shared effort, local wisdom, and a spirit of experimentation.

The journey remains far from over. In the weeks ahead, more hands-on work will enrich the space and weave the community even closer together.
